驚くべくことに、2017年にSoundcloudで再生された曲のトップ50位が全てヒップホップアーティストによるものだったことが明らかになった。
今年Soundcloudで再生されたトップ50には、かつて支配的だったダンスミュージックをはじめ、R&B、Pop、Rockなど、ヒップホップ以外の曲によるランクインは見られなかった。Soundcloudはこれまでもラッパーがスターになるきっかけを作ってきたプラットフォームであるが、「他サービスとの差異化」が今後ますます重要となってくるストリーミングサービスの世界において、このサービスが今後これまで以上にヒップホップ寄りのプラットフォームになっていく可能性も考えられる。
また、ヒップホップ人気は2017年の世界的な現象として起こっており、アメリカのみならず、イギリスやドイツ、カナダにおけるSoundcloudの同様のランキングにおいても同じような結果が見られたという。さらにSoundcloudのみならず、Spotifyにおいてもその現象は見られ、2017年に世界で再生されたアーティストでトップ5にDrake、Kendrick Lamar、The Weekendがランクインしているというニュース(1位はEd Sheeran)は先週FNMNLでも報じたばかりだ 。
2017年のヒップホップの躍進を語る際に、要因として無視することができないものとして新鋭ラッパーたちの存在がある。彼らの驚くほどに実験的なアティチュードは今年のラップゲームに新たな刺激をもたらしてきた。今回のSoundcloudの再生回数年間トップ50ランキングにおいては、XXXTentacion、6ixNine、Lil Uzi Vert、Lil Pumpをはじめとする新鋭たちの名前が多くランクインしているが、これ自体が「ストリーミングによる金額の配当を議論するのではなく、収益方法のより広い可能性に目を向けている」新世代のラッパーたちのアティチュードを象徴しているものにも見える。
